Yup I realized this over time as well. The Ascent was my first publication but I only had about 30 followers so it didn't get me anywhere. Realized a bit late that I needed engagement, reading articles, and additional followers to get the reads i was looking for. Publications are a boost to your readings, but shouldn't be the sole reason your articles are looked at.
